Morning classes and good routines

Ever had an early morning class and just feel absolutely exhausted? Well you’re definitely not alone in that problem. My friends are always in early morning classes, and they constantly tell me how tired they are or that they can’t focus. You know what they all told me helps? Having a routine and going to bed at a decent time every night.

I’ve noticed that when I actually sleep and get a good eight to ten hours, I actually pay attention and I’m way happier throughout the day. Classes are harder when a student stays up late and pulls an all-nighter.

Staying up late to study or do other things like playing video games, or using a phone can make it harder to fall asleep. “According to a 2021 Harvard Med Study, pulling an all nighter to cram makes it so your brain doesn’t retain information as well as it could. Sleeping helps your brain process the information you learned that day.”

Some ways that can help you fall asleep is refraining from screens at least an hour before you plan to go to bed. Switch it up by reading a physical book, dimming the lights, or journaling about all the things you’re thinking about or worried about.

Now, I understand that not everyone loves mornings. I’m definitely one of those people. I love sleeping in, but not every major gives you the luxury of later classes. If you have one of those majors then it’s even more critical to have a schedule. If at all possible, take later classes that fit the way you live.

Having a routine helps your body regulate well so that when you lay down for the night you can sleep peacefully. Instead of tossing and turning with thoughts that cloud your brain, you sleep well and wake up to face the tough classes you used to dread.

Not only does it matter how you fall asleep, it matters how you wake up. Try moving your body in the morning, like walking. I love to take a short walk in the morning. It helps me get centered so I’m organized for the day ahead. I also make sure to drink some water before other types of beverages so my body feels good.

Be mindful of your caffeine intake. This can sabotage your nighttime sleep. I don’t drink caffeine after noon. This helps me keep up with the day but I end the day tired and ready to fall asleep.

What does a routine look like? It looks like putting aside time each day to do the things you need to do and balancing that with the things you love to do. It’s hard at first but helps in the long run.

Next time you sign up for classes, remember that there are ways for you to avoid losing your mind. You can go to class and still feel like a person, so give it a try! It might work for you too.
