As we near the close of another academic year at Casper College, I find myself thinking about something Theodore Roosevelt once wrote, often referred to as “The Man in the Arena.” He reminds us that credit belongs not to the critic on the sidelines, but to the person who steps forward into the arena, who strives, who risks coming up short, and who dares greatly.
That idea isn’t just for graduates. It belongs to every student here who chose to continue their education. Whether you completed a single course this year or are walking across the stage at commencement, you have been in the arena. You showed up. You engaged. You worked through many challenges students face whether it’s academic, personal, or everything in between. You didn’t just learn the content from your courses, but how to persist when life gets difficult. That matters, and is something you will take with you through life.
For those graduating, your time in this particular arena is coming to a close, and something larger now opens in front of you. As you step forward, I hope you carry with you not only what you learned, but how you learned. Aristotle wrote that “the high-minded person must care more for the truth than for what people think.” That idea is as relevant today as it was centuries ago. The world you are entering needs people who are willing to think clearly, act with integrity, seek truth, and have the courage to do all these, even when it’s difficult.
