A new path to publication at Casper College

By Kaleb Lundine

For Casper College students who want to publish their works they now have a new opportunity to do so. The Writing Center has officially opened “Avenues Journal, A Multidisciplinary Journal For Emerging Scholars” reviving what was formally known as “Challenge Journal”.

The original publication “Challenge” was founded in 1987 by English Instructor Arlene Larson.

Larson served as the editor in chief. The publication ran from 1987-2003 before shutting down. Challenge briefly came back in 2007 before closing its doors once more due to Larsons’ retirement.

Current Editor In Chief Keenan Morgan now serves as the acting editor in chief at Avenues. He serves alongside Catie and Kathryn Morgan who serve as assistant journal managers for Avenues.

“The idea for Avenues came from discussions that we were having in the center about how there’s expressions, you know, for creative work. There are other undergraduate academic journals at universities and colleges across the country, and somebody had commented, wouldn’t it be great if there was something like that at Casper College?” Morgan said.

Avenues works as a platform and tool for CC students looking to publish their academic works to better their future resumes and academic progression.

“It’s an opportunity to be a focused author, which you can use on your resume, you can use when looking for jobs, or if you’re trying to get into academia,” Morgan said.

Morgan said Avenues will be happy to accept submissions from all corners of writing, as the publication.

Avenues is multidisciplinary. Any academic field of study — political science, education, science, psychology, medicine, business, or English – can submit as long as it meets standards of academics and is not fiction based.

“We won’t accept your submission if it is fiction,” Morgan stated.

The mission of Avenues is to promote and highlight student excellence at CC. Avenues follows the motto “Research, Innovation, Scholarship, and Excellence” or “RISE”. Morgan said he hopes avenues will properly reflect and showcase strong student merit.

“It would be a big thing to have from a two-year college moving on to a four-year university saying, ‘I’m already published. I’m in the publishing world.’ So that might help students get into programs maybe they want to get into,” Morgan said.

Group projects are allowed and encouraged as submissions, though Morgan insisted that all credit must be given to any participants, even though only one person is needed to submit. Single individuals are permitted a maximum of three works for review. All works must be submitted by the September 15 deadline. Anyone with a project ready is encouraged to submit as soon as possible.

Once works are submitted, both Avenues and writing center staff comb through submissions and make sure submissions adhere to guidelines. Once a submission passes through vetting, it goes to a three-judge panel that reviews the content of the works. The work will go on to publishing if it passes the three-judge panel.

Avenues will print and publish both a physical paper copy and an online version for the public to read. Morgan emphasized the importance of keeping a copy of people’s work as it can lead to greater opportunities later in one’s life.

“It’ll be primarily online and accessible for years after. One of the parts of the author agreement is that if they choose to opt in their work is archived so that even five years down the line, ten years down the line their work will still be online and accessible for somebody to look at,” Morgan said.

Avenues Journal offers CC students a permanent, institutionally embedded platform that provides the opportunity to showcase academic work and achievements. Morgan encourages students to submit their work and pave way to create a stronger academic future for students at

CC.
